Is there any downtime after being treated with lasers?

Erythema (redness) and slight edema (swelling) are very normal after having a laser treatment and usually resolve after a day or two. However, patients receiving treatment for benign pigmented lesions and “laser peels” may experience micro crusting or even sloughing of the skin for a week to ten days.

If I’ve been in the sun, use a tanning bed, or use sunless tanning products, can I be treated with a laser?

Because the GentleLASE Pro laser absorbs melanin/pigment, it’s advised that patients avoid ANY sun exposure, tanning beds, and sunless tanning products for at least 2 weeks prior to treatment and 2 weeks after. Patients are advised to avoid sun exposure and tanning beds for 1 week prior to treatment and 2 weeks after. If you are unsure about whether you can undergo a laser hair removal treatment, then please feel free to contact us at (818) 507-0909. It is best to speak to a professional about any concerns you may have about lasers and sun exposure prior to your treatment.

How many treatments do I need?

The number of treatments required is dependent on several factors. First, the body area being treated for hair will play a factor in number of treatments. Also, every patient responds differently – therefore you should not compare your course of treatment to someone else’s. Typically, you can expect a laser hair removal treatment to range between 6-8 sessions with intervals of 4-6 weeks between each session. Remember, number of treatments will vary based on various factors. If you still have questions about the number of treatments you may need, then please contact Prolase for a complementary consultation at (818) 507-0909

My hair appears to be growing more rapidly in the area treated. Is this normal?

After your treatment, it is normal for your hair to go through the process of “shedding” – where hair quickly tries to expel itself from the dead hair follicle. During this time, you may notice your hair coming out more rapidly. It is NOT actually growing! Hair follicles were destroyed during the laser treatment. The loose hairs will then begin to “shed” – this is a normal process. Remember, refrain from picking or pullying at the loose hairs. You may shave at this time, if needed, without compromising the effectiveness of your treatment.

How long should I avoid photosensitive medications?

It depends on the medication being used by the patient. Patients should be off of Accutane for at least 6 months prior to laser treatments. Other medications should be examined and a test spot be performed if there is any concern of an adverse reaction. Retinoids should also be ceased 3–5 days prior to laser treatment as they can create excessive redness. You should always notify your professional laser hair removal practitioner of any drugs and medications that you are taking prior to any treatment. You may find a list of common photosensitive drugs here.

Can I be treated for both laser hair removal and laser skin tightening the same day on the same area?

We recommend performing each treatment separately and as advised by your professional laser technician.

Can you perform laser treatments and a chemical peel the same day on the same area?

We recommend that each treatment be treated individually and on different days.

Can I undergo a laser and microdermabrasion treatment in the same day on the same area?

It is advisable that each treatment be treated separately and on different days.

How long should a I wait before applying make up, deodorant, etc?

It’s recommended that you wait 2–3 hours or until any redness or swelling subsides before applying make-up and deodorant. If you are unsure, you would always contact your professional laser technician at 818-507-0909.

When treating legs for hair reduction, do they need to be cleanly shaven?

Yes, all areas being treated for hair reduction should be shaved the day prior to treatment. Any hair that is above the surface of the skin will absorb light that is intended for the hair follicle.

How long before and after should I avoid sun exposure or tanning beds?

We advise you to avoid direct or unnecessary sun exposure and tanning beds for at least two weeks prior and two weeks after. We understand that you cannot always avoid direct sunlight (i.e. when driving), so we highly recommend that you use a sunscreen with SPF 30+.

What should be applied to the skin post treatment?

There are many different things that can be applied to the skin after a laser treatment. Some ointments include (but are not limited to): aloe vera, cold compresses, hydrocortisone 1%, and SPF 30+ sun block.

I am on antibiotics right now, can I get laser hair removal?

If you are taking a course of antibiotics, you should let your laser technician profession know right away. You should refrain from getting any type of laser treatment. Antibiotics are photosensitive to laser and there is a risk known to cause hyperpigmentation of the skin.
