Which Palomar® handpiece and settings are suggested to treat acne?

Although acne is a chronic condition that cannot be cured, the Palomar LuxVTM handpiece optimizes the visible spectrum of light that is absorbed by porphyrins which affects p.acnes bacteria to fight future acne breakouts. Please refer to the Palomar Treatment Guide for recommended settings. The White Paper on Palomar’s website by Robert S. Berger, MD titled Acne Therapy – Experience with Palomar LuxV™ Intense Pulsed Light Therapy is another resource of information.

If I don’t’ have the LuxVTM handpiece, can I use the LuxGTM handpiece to treat acne?

The LuxGTM handpiece can be used to treat vascular areas and redness, and may help with the cosmetic appearance of acne, but it will not inhibit future breakouts.

What is the typical clinical endpoint for acne prevention treatment with the LuxVTM handpiece?

Moderate erythema (redness) should serve as a clinical endpoint for the treatment. For example, if the treated area is moderately red after 2 passes, that should indicate the end of the treatment.

How many acne prevention treatments with the LuxVTM handpiece are necessary?

Results vary between individuals but most acne clients will require between 4-8 treatments, depending on the severity of their condition, compliance with home care routine, their lifestyle and diet. Acne treatment generally requires 4-8 treatments, on average, performed either once a week for 4-8 weeks or once every 2 weeks for 8-16 weeks. For resistant acne, a client may require maintenance treatments at 3 – 6 month intervals to help keep acne breakouts under control.

What light-coupling agent should be used with the LuxVTM handpiece?

Apply a thin layer of Palomar LuxLotionTM to clean, dry skin prior to treatment. The use of any other gel or lotion is not recommended and may serve to void the handpiece warranty.

Can I get treated with the LuxVTM handpiece if I am recently tanned?

NO! DO NOT TREAT TANNED SKIN (caused by the sun, tanning bed, sun lamp, or self-tanner) with the LuxVTM handpiece.

Can I get treated if I have had BOTOX® Cosmetic treatments?

There is the possibility for increased diffusion of Botulinums, such as BOTOX® Cosmetic, as a result of edema associated with facial light-based treatment, which may result in facial asymmetry when these procedures are performed contemporaneously. Many physicians recommend waiting for a minimum of 2 weeks after a BOTOX® Cosmetic injection before performing facial light-based treatments. Palomar has conducted no clinical trials and cannot recommend any specific waiting time.
